Understanding What A Navicular Syndrome Is

By Minnie Whitley

There are some horses that find it difficult to walk. Sometimes this syndrome would happen to them between ages four to nine years old. You could refer to it as Navicular Syndrome. There are those who call it a disease because different parts of their foot can be affected when they have this one. It is usually seen in the front feet. One may have seen it in the rear feet but that is really a rare case.

There are some breeds that are much affected by this compared to other ones. There are some breeds that react to this problem differently. For others they might feel that it is crippling but there are some who will just ignore this.

There were many theories that have explained what has caused it to begin. They first thought of it as an arthritis that is caused by so much pressure from pounding. There were also studies that have been made so people will be able to fully understand this. But, what is sure is that some traits could be used to determine this early if they would suffer from it.

It says that if they have a history in their lineage who have suffered this will have a great possibility of acquiring this too. This is usually inherited from the parents and the grandparents as well. If they would have such traits then it is possible that they would be experiencing such cases.

They have also proved that when techniques on how you trim or shoe them is not proper then that will contribute in having such syndrome faster than what is normal. If your horses do strenuous work then they will be having this faster most especially if they have those traits. It will also happen to those who work on ground conditions not proper for them for so long where its surface is hard enough. Their diet could also be one factor on it sometimes.

Their front foot which is affected will be changing its appearance as time passes by. It will also become severe. The foot would be contracted to the heels and would shrink in size. It will be boxy in shape as time passes by. It will also be smaller compared to the one which were not affected.

Those who have a history on its lineage could suffer from this. This is confirmed to be true since it is passed from one generation to another generation. If the horse has a small foot to support his body weight then it has a high risk of having it. As an owner, you have to condition them before they would be doing some tasks.

The treatment which is best for this is using the shoe that will be supporting and protecting their heels. It would aid in reducing pain they would be feeling. The toe of the shoe must be shaped in ways that ease their movement. Do that until the angle and the position of the foot is back in shape.

If you would be giving proper care and proper treatment then their usefulness will last for many years. Aside from this, they will be in good condition. One can make it possible by providing the horses with more exercise and a more balanced diet.
