Individual Psychotherapy Encourages Personal Growth Nd Healing

By Sherry Gross

Seeking the support and help of a dedicated psychotherapist is one of the most effective ways a patient can recover from emotional and psychological traumas and limitations. By undergoing a customized individual psychotherapy program, patients will learn new ways to gain control over these problems and experience healing of the mind and emotions. Different therapists may employ varying strategies, depending on the particular needs of each patient.

The number of sessions a patient needs differs, but typically at least eight are required to make sufficient progress. As the psychologist asks the patient questions, he or she forms a picture of the key issues that need to be addressed and the best way to go about doing this. In some cases the problem is apparent and prompts the patient to seek help, other times it is underlying and must be identified first.

Once the therapist and patient have figured out what the primary issue is, they will likely discuss possible reasons why it exists, and then begin to devise a program to help solve it. Although the patient is trusting the knowledge and judgment of the therapist when it comes to choosing the most suitable approach, he or she should not hesitate to tell the professional if at any time it feels as though another direction should be taken.

A positive relationship built on trust between the therapist and patient is fundamental to the success of the therapy program. Open communications are the key to making breakthroughs, so it's important that patients be able to open up to their psychologists and share their feelings with them in order that the professional will know the best way to help them. A therapist needs to be patient, warm, compassionate, honest, and ready to listen without passing judgment.

Therapy is a guided plan of constructive steps with several goals, both preliminary objectives reached with each successive session, as well as one final goal to be attained upon completion of the counseling sessions. Determination and visualization on the part of the patient can play a big role in determining how successful the therapy program will be.

Tools that are vital to effective therapy include strategies for coping, being able to re-evaluate one's expectations of himself or herself along with life priorities, and learning to focus on personal strengths and downplay weaknesses. The therapist will help patients develop these tools, which are necessary for building a positive mindset needed for recovery.

When final session arrives, the patient now has the responsibility to start putting to use all of the valuable information he or she has acquired from the therapist over the last few weeks or months. Maintaining communication with the psychologist is advisable however, with periodic follow-up sessions being scheduled as needed, just to touch base and make sure there is no issues with relapse.

If the client has the right attitude towards it, psychotherapy can be very effective in helping him or her achieve victory over the troubling issues. In order to enjoy a positive outcome, it is ultimately up to the patient to exercise diligence, and put what they have learned to good use. The therapist is there to make suggestions, but clients must be willing to listen and act on these suggestions if they are to make progress.
